Find your child's league age, division and birth date range. Plan every season ahead for baseball and softball.
Baseball and softball use different cutoff dates, so pick the right sport first.
Your birth date is only used in your browser. Nothing is sent or saved.
The roadmap starts at the season you picked above and shows the next 8 seasons.
See which birth dates fit a division in the season you picked. Useful for coaches and league volunteers.
| Division | League ages |
|---|---|
| Tee Ball | 4 โ 7 |
| Minor League | 7 โ 12 |
| Little League (Majors) | 9 โ 12 |
| Intermediate (50/70), baseball only | 11 โ 13 |
| Junior League | 12 โ 14 |
| Senior League | 13 โ 16 |
These are the official ranges. Your local league may narrow them. Always confirm with your league and the current age chart on littleleague.org.
Little League does not use a child's age today. It uses "league age," which is fixed by a cutoff date. This calculator does that math for you and then goes further. It shows the divisions your child can join, where they sit in their age group, and every season ahead.
Try the three examples first. They show how one child can have a different league age in baseball and softball.
League age is the age Little League assigns to a player for a whole season. It is the child's actual age on a set cutoff date. It does not change when the child has a birthday in the middle of the season. A child who is league age 11 on opening day is league age 11 at the final game.
League age decides which division a child may join. It also controls pitching limits, since Little League pitch-count rules are set by league age. Leagues usually ask for a birth certificate or other proof of age when you sign up.
This is where most parents get stuck. Little League International sets two different rules:
| Sport | Age is counted on | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Baseball | August 31 of the season year | Birth month and day matter |
| Softball | December 31 of the previous year | Only the birth year matters |
Take a child born on March 15, 2015. In the 2027 baseball season, she is 12 on August 31, 2027, so her league age is 12. In 2027 softball, her age on December 31, 2026 is 11, so her league age is 11. Same child, same season, two different league ages.
Now take a child born on September 20, 2015. For baseball in 2027, he is still 11 on August 31, because his birthday comes after the cutoff. His league age is 11. That is why a September birthday can feel unfair. The calculator removes the guesswork.
Little League International lists these league age ranges for baseball and softball:
Local boards can narrow these ranges. A league may run Majors only for ages 10 to 12, or even 11 to 12. Players aged 5 or 6 who have finished one Tee Ball season may also join Minor League. Your league has the final say, so check with them before registration.
Here is the 2027 chart for common ages. For baseball, dates run from September 1 to August 31. For softball, the birth year alone decides.
| League age | Baseball: born between | Softball: born in |
|---|---|---|
| 8 | Sep 1, 2018 โ Aug 31, 2019 | 2018 |
| 9 | Sep 1, 2017 โ Aug 31, 2018 | 2017 |
| 10 | Sep 1, 2016 โ Aug 31, 2017 | 2016 |
| 11 | Sep 1, 2015 โ Aug 31, 2016 | 2015 |
| 12 | Sep 1, 2014 โ Aug 31, 2015 | 2014 |
| 13 | Sep 1, 2013 โ Aug 31, 2014 | 2013 |
For any other season, use the Division Birth Dates mode. It builds the same chart for the year you pick.
A league age group is not 12 months of equal kids. In baseball, a league age 12 player might be born on September 1, 2014 or August 31, 2015. The first child is almost a full year older than the second, yet both play in the same group.
The calculator shows this on a small gauge. Children born in September to December are among the oldest in their group for baseball. Children born in July and August are among the youngest. For softball, the calendar year is the window, so January babies are the oldest and December babies the youngest. This does not decide talent. It is useful context when you think about size, strength and when to move up. If your child is on the young side, a little patience often helps, since each year of growth closes the gap. If your child is on the older side, the roadmap shows when they will age out.
Planning one season at a time is easy to get wrong. The roadmap mode lists eight seasons in a row. Take a baseball player born June 2, 2017. In 2027, he has a league age of 10. In 2028 he is 11, and in 2029 he is 12, his last year in Majors. In 2030 he is 13 and moves to Intermediate, Junior or Senior League.
The roadmap marks key moments such as the first Majors-eligible season and the last year in each division. Use it to see when your child will age out, and when a younger sibling will start.
Many parents think league age changes on the child's birthday. It does not. For baseball, the number is set by the child's age on the coming August 31, even in March when practices begin. A boy who is 11 in March and turns 12 in July is league age 12 for that whole season. For softball, the number is fixed by the calendar year, so a girl born in 2015 is league age 11 for every softball season that starts in 2027, whatever her birthday.
This is why the calculator asks for the season. The same birth date gives a new league age each year, and a child can jump a division sooner than you expect.
The Challenger Division gives children with physical or intellectual challenges a place to play. It uses its own age range of 4 to 18. A local league may allow players up to 22 if they are still in school and no Senior League Challenger division is run. Talk to your league administrator about how Challenger is run locally.
Little League is only one of many youth baseball groups. Other organizations, including travel and tournament groups, use different cutoff dates. A child can be in one age group for Little League and a different one for a travel team. Always check each organization's own chart. Do not assume a "10U" travel team matches a league age 10 Little League player.
If you run a roster or a registration desk, the Division Birth Dates mode saves time. Pick the division and season, and you get the exact birth date range. You can print or screenshot it for the registration table. Check any child on the edge of a range with the League Age mode to be sure. Edge cases are rare, but they cause the most arguments. When a family asks for an exception, send them to the league president.
A child can play in any division whose range includes their league age. A 12-year-old, for example, fits Minor League, Majors and Junior League on paper. Going beyond a division's range, or below a narrower range set by your local board, normally needs approval from the league. Ask your league president or player agent early, because registration deadlines come fast.
League age is not only about which team a child joins. It also sets the daily pitch limit and the rest days a pitcher needs. Use the pitch count calculator to check the limit and plan rest. Parents who want to know how well a young pitcher is doing can read our guide on what a good ERA is in Little League.
Age groups keep games fair and safe. Children grow fast between 8 and 13. Bases get farther apart, the pitching distance gets longer, and the ball travels farther as players move up. Putting children of similar age together means a nine-year-old is not facing a thirteen-year-old's fastball. A fixed cutoff date is simple, clear and the same for everyone, even if it creates a few edge cases around the date itself.
This calculator follows the rules published by Little League International when we last checked, in October 2026. It is a guide, not an official ruling. Your local league and Little League International make the final call.
